Kevin graduated with a B.Admin degree from the University of Regina in 1983, having majored in accounting. He received his C.A. designation in 1986 and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 1990. He subsequently articled at the Balfour Moss law firm and was called to the bar in 1991 in the Province of Saskatchewan. Kevin merged Mellor Law firm with McCrank Stewart LLP on February 1st, 2010, joining the firm as an associate.
Kevin has extensive experience as a litigator and as a corporate finance and securities lawyer. He has been involved in all aspects of the cases from preparing pleadings and witnesses to arguing cases before all levels of the courts. In particular he has appeared before the Federal Court of Appeal, most notably the cases of Kershaw v. Canada 92 DTC 6240 (Extension of Limitation Period) and Horsnall v. HMTQ 2006 FCA 381 (Penalty Review); the Tax Court of Canada, most notably the cases of Min Shan Shih v. HMTQ Docket: 97-3044-IT-G (Non-residency in Canada), Miller v. HMTQ Docket: 98-80-IT-G (Reasonable Expectation of Profit) and Saskatchewan Pesticide Container Management Inc. v. HMTQ Docket: 97-3205-GST-G (Penalty Forgiveness); the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, most notably the cases of Toms Grain & Cattle Co. Ltd. v. Arcola Livestock Sales Ltd. 2006 SKCA 20 (De-certification of Class Action) and Saskatchewan Wheat Pool v. Smith CA97019 (Defence of Security Interest under Personal Property Security Act); Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench, most notably the cases of Floros v. Mueller 2003 SKQB 513 (Defence of debt surviving bankruptcy), Height of Excellence Financial Planning Group Inc. v. Dixon 1999 SKQB 101 (Defence of Injunction) and the Saskatchewan Securities Commission v. Grandel QB 99198 (Defence of Securities Extension Order for Contravention).
As a corporate finance and securities lawyer, Kevin has experience advising and preparing offering memorandums and prospectuses and securities issues in the USA and Canada; prepared and filed F-1 and SB-2 Registration Statements (Prospectus) for filing with the SEC; prepared and filed 15C211's with the NASD; been responsible for taking multiple private corporations public in the USA; prepared and filed 10-Q and 10-K annual returns with the SEC; prepared and filed Rule 506 Private Placement Offering Memorandums; established offshore trust and corporate service company, together with advising on corporate commercial matters and prepare documentation for completion of business transactions
In addition to working in private practice for most of the last twenty years, Kevin has had a varied career in that he worked for two years as the President & Chairman of the International Financial Group Inc. in the Cayman Islands from 2000-2002, worked as a sessional lecturer at the University of Regina from 1993-2000 on a part-time basis and also worked as NHL Players agent for International Representation Inc. of Regina, SK from 1992-1994.
Kevin is a passionate golfer having been a member of the Saskatchewan Junior Golf Team which won the Western Canadian Junior Golf Team Championship in 1977, and also is an active runner having run in the Vancouver Marathon, Chinook Half Ironman, Queen City Marathon, Canadian Ironman and Pancake Half Ironman. In addition to spending time with his wife, Tina and their twins, Kevin still enjoys playing hockey, golfing, running triathlons, and has his third degree in Krav Maga.
Kevin is currently a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Saskatchewan, the Law Society of Saskatchewan, past Chairman of the Canadian Bar Association, Taxation South, past member of National Hockey League Player's Association (NHLPA), past Secretary of the Canadian Bar Association, Taxation South, and past member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Saskatchewan Professional Conduct Committee.
